Course content and outcomes

At the conclusion of this course the delegate should understand the importance and objectives of the Human Resource tools and requirements:

  • The impact of defining a role as a set of clear and interrelated tasks,
  • Why job grading matters,
  • How salaries are determined,
  • Best practice in the recruitment process:
    • internally,
    • externally,
  • The role of the manager in on-boarding,
  • Monitoring the probation period and considerations if extending,
  • Formal contracting for performance,
  • Challenges of the performance review process,
  • Encouraging further training and development,
  • Supporting team members to identify their career and steps to be taken,
  • The manager’s first response to misconduct, poor performance or incapacity due to illness,
  • Communicating effectively with your team:
    • what to share with whom,
  • Communicating up-wards:
    • what your boss needs to know,
  • The impact on team morale when the manager is seen to be fair, open and approachable,
  • The legislative reporting requirements where HR needs your inputs,
  • Understanding legislated and statutory deductions on payroll,
  • Terminations and good-byes.

The course is aimed at first-time managers with or without management experience.
